IN-PERSON WORKSHOP: Becoming a Behavioural Detective: Understanding and Supporting Complex Behaviour - Live in Liberty Lake, WA

  • In Person 22302 East Country Vista Drive Liberty Lake, WA, 99019 United States (map)

In-Person Training in Liberty Lake, Washington.

Come attend Kim Barthel's most popular course around the world! Step into curiosity for a deeper understanding of why people and children do what they do.

There is always a reason for the behavior! This one-day workshop will provide an understanding of the integrated neurobiology of sensory processing and emotional/relational problems that can relate to “challenging behavior”. Participants will be invited to forevermore become behavioral detectives, using clinical reasoning to look deeper than the surface actions we observe. By seeking to understand why people do the things they do, from a myriad of perspectives, we allow compassion into the equation. This alone changes the brain - and the mindset of clinical curiosity supports treatment strategies at home, at school, in the clinic or workplace, and in all levels of relationships.

This workshop invites participants to expand their focus away from “managing behavior” to a lens of self-understanding. Why am I triggered by this person’s behavior? How do I regulate my own nervous system in the presence of behaviors I experience as difficult? Through a blend of lecture, storytelling, video analysis and group discussions this day will be one to remember - both as professional development and personal empowerment.

What will we learn?

  • Developmental disabilities and the neurobiology of dysregulation

  • To differentiate between sensory, emotional and cognitive contributions to behavior

  • The impact of developmental trauma on regulation and social engagement

  • Supporting challenging behavior through sensory and relationally-informed interventions

  • Self-awareness, self-regulation and self-care in our work

Open to anyone, including a wide range of therapists, educators, early-childhood and group home staff, social workers, counsellors and parents/caregivers.
